Wow! What a day for the Smoketown Community! The Hancock Development Ceremonial Groundbreaking is Phase 1 for the SmoketownCLT and more affordable quality housing opportunities are coming to Louisville soon!
The “C” in SmoketownCLT stands for Community. After our groundbreaking, many neighbors stayed to join us in a “Visioning” session — a powerful reminder that the voices of Smoketown residents must be heard and included in the planning of the Finzer Lot development.
SmoketownCLT is committed to ensuring residents not only have a seat at the table, but also play an active role in shaping what is brought into Smoketown.
A Community Land Trust (CLT) is a nonprofit, community-based corporation dedicated to the long-term stewardship and affordability of land, housing, and other spaces for community benefit. Developments on the Finzer site — along with the affordable homes we build — will be created with the community and will remain for the community, not just today but for generations to come.

The Smoketown Community Land Trust is new to Louisville KY - but the Community Land Trust model is NOT new. It is a proven and successful model that has been thriving throughout the United States since the late 1960's.
The first community land trust in the US grew out of the southern civil rights movement as a tool for establishing a new form of land tenure for black farmers and their families. Today, there are about 225 community land trusts in the United States. The model was pioneered by black farmers in the South and spread across the country as communities realized its potential for preserving access to land over many generations.
